South Korea’s software contents market is forecast to grow into a 470 billion won market backed by aggressive investments to cater to an open market jump-started by the launch of iPhone, according to a report released by Digieco, Korea Telecom’ research center, on February 7 on iPhone’s social and economic impact in the South Korean market.
iPhone will expand the wireless data market by 1.9 trillion won buoyed by active developments of various applications and cell phone plans.
In terms of job creation, the active software and contents industry is projected to create some 4,900 jobs by 2012. In particular, the industry is expected to exploit and enhance its IT capabilities concentrated on non-smartphones to expedite its entry into the global smarphone market.
Smartphone penetration is around 1 percent of the country’s total subscribers of mobile phones while the sales ratio of smartphones from total sales of cell phones is 10 percent or half the U.S. (23 percent).
KT Digieco believes that iPhone’s entry into the South Korean market will lower the price tag of smartphones, thus, raising its penetration rate to 17 percent by 2012.
The report underlined that the iPhone is also encouraging the development of the services sector by converging smartphone with different industries.
For instance, 17 South Korean commercial banks are seeking to develop and service a standard model for mobile banking on smartphones such as iPhone in the first half of the year.
The fast growth of mobile office which supports office work through smarphones in real-time is estimated to shorten one’s working hour by 65 minutes.
